(Victor Valley)–“Every mask hides a smile.”

This Saturday evening the glamor of Venetian Masquerade will come to the High Desert. High Desert Rotary ( ) is hosting their first large-scale event, a masquerade ball. The elegant evening will include live music, a scene performed by Victor Valley College’s Performing Arts Center, and of course dancing. Held at Kinari Bistro ( ) from 7:30 pm to midnight, guests can also participate in a number of raffles for prizes including golf, spa treatments and a big screen television.

Held in honor of late community leader Betty Towle, the ball is raising money for a cause she was passionate about and that is a focus for Rotary Clubs across the country: Rotoplast ( Rotoplast gives life-changing surgery to children with cleft palate and cleft lip. The specific mission they are raising funds for is March 13-25, 2011 in Guatemala and the club hopes to raise at least $500 to fund one surgery.

There are still tickets available online ( and you can by tickets at the door. If you buy tickets at the door, they do not include a complimentary mask but you will enjoy all the other benefits: a complimentary glass of French wine, heavy hors d’ouevres and an entry into the big raffle at the end of the night. Additional beverages and raffle entries are available for purchase. All proceeds after costs will go toward Rotoplast and other projects by the High Desert Rotary.

The High Desert Rotary was founded about a year ago to meet the needs of young professionals interested in the service organization. The dues are just $25 a month and they meet in the evenings. Since young people might have more time than money, the club focuses on service projects, including a Senior Honey-Do project where they recently adopted a low-income senior housing neighborhood and took care of much-needed maintenance and upkeep on their homes.

Rotary International ( is oldest service club in the world, founded in 1905. They perform service locally, regionally and nationally for a variety of causes.
