(Apple Valley)–What a sight! More than 25 Animal Services staff and volunteers took to the streets yesterday leading every shelter canine on leash. All of this attention was to bring awareness to the shelter’s efforts to win a $100,000 grant to benefit those very animals.
Charlene Engeron, Public Relations Specialist for the Town of Apple Valley, explained, “We are participating in the ASPCA $100,000 challenge. We have only 12 days, starting today, to gather enough votes to get into the top 50 in order to qualify for the $100,000 grant.”
This is the second year in a row that the ASPCA has offered the $100K Challenge. It is a nationwide competition for animal shelters aiming to get more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. The first phase is the qualifying heat where registered shelters compete to accumulate the most online votes from their supporters. The 50 shelters with the most votes become official contestants for the 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge.
The volunteers walking on Apple Valley Roads were wearing bright orange shirts and carrying signs that said “Click to Vote”. They are calling the event “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
To vote for the Apple Valley Animal shelter visit the ASPCA challenge page at www.votetosavelives.org. On that page scroll through the shelter names – they are listed by state, find CA-Town of Apple Valley Animal Services. Click on their name, enter your e-mail address below and the capture code, then check your e-mail to confirm your vote.
“We are encouraging everyone to vote EVERYDAY from EVERY e-mail address you own!” said Engeron.
She continued, “We need as many votes as we can get to qualify so that we have a shot. With that $100,000 grant we are going to purchase a mobile shelter unit which will allow us to perform off site adoptions, low cost spay/neuter, emergency animal evacuations, educational presentations, licensing, vet clinics and more. We can save so many animal lives with this new mobile unit.”
