(Victor Valley)-All the publishers and developers of tomorrow’s biggest video game hits came together this week for the Super Bowl of their industry: the E3 Gaming Expo and High Desert Daily was present for the festivities.
For the record, they did not disappoint.
The E3 Expo (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is the premiere trade show in the world, rattling the streets of Los Angeles every year. An industry and press only event, it is hard for most to grasp what this show is and why it is so mind blowing. Well, wonder no more, as I lay out for you the enormity that was E3.
Sensory overload is the first thing that came to mind going into one of the huge exhibit halls of the L.A. Convention Center: darkened aisles, illuminated with a rainbow of colors emitting off of the various towering booths. It really is a site, no matter what other shows you may have been to.
I have been to comic conventions in the past, but the quality and sheer mass of these booths blow others right out of the water. I mean, Nintendo and Sony had two story booths, which amazed me. But enough of the lay of the battlefield, here are the standout spots of this year’s expo:
- Nintendo- The house of Mario brought the heat with the reveal of their brand new system, the Wii U. Using controllers that look similar to the iPad with buttons, Nintendo showed off a variety of games, my favorite being a new entry into the Legend of Zelda franchise.
- THQ- The booth showcased everything from the new uDraw tablet coming to X-Box 360 and PS3, to UFC games (one that uses the Kinect camera), WWE’s new offering, Space Marine, and two of the show stoppers of E3: Saints Row The Third and Metro: Last Light. Saints Row is one of the most over the top, non stop actions games I have seen, and Metro: Last Light is one of the grimmest, gripping games shown at the entire expo.
- Capcom-The company that brought us Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Devil May Cry, to name a few, fired on all cylinders at E3. Street Fighter X Tekken is looking to be a monumental fighter, Dragon’s Dogma brings the action with swords and chimeras, and Dead Rising won’t stay dead with the new spin off, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.
- Sony-Of course, Sony would not be outdone by the recent release of Nintendo’s 3DS. Sony officially revealed PS Vita, their new handheld system, and it looks to please on every angle. The graphics were drop dead awesome, and with two multi-touch surfaces (front and back), this looks to be just what Sony needed.
That’s is only scratching the surface of this expo. With games like Skull Girls, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and RAGE coming soon, I think all gamers alike will be busy all the way till next year’s E3.
