Freedom Festival Celebrates The USA

(Apple Valley)–Why go out of town to celebrate Independence Day? The Town of Apple Valley will offer the best celebration close to home at the Lenny Brewster Sports Center on July 4.

Celebrating its fourteenth year, the Town of Apple Valley Freedom Festival has grown to draw between 10,000 and 12,000 visitors annually on Independence Day. This year, enjoy the country sounds of “Silverado,” at Lenny Brewster Sports Center from 2 to 4:15 p.m. The Lewis Center Academy for Academic Excellence Air Force JROTC Drill Team will perform from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by the evening’s headliner,  Southbound, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

All day park festivities include the Apple Valley Fire District Jr. Combat Challenge, multiple bounce houses and inflatable games, and a wide array of merchandise for sale. Food booths featuring funnel cakes, kettle corn, fresh lemonade and barbecue will be complimented by the Victor Valley Sunrise Rotary beer garden.

Visitors can beat the heat at 3 p.m. with the Water Spectacular featuring red, white and blue water spray from fire hoses pointed toward the sky.

Worn and tattered American flags brought to any fire station before July 4 will be included in the Fire Explorers flag retirement ceremony at dusk. The evening will culminate with the best fireworks show in the High Desert choreographed to music beginning at 9 p.m. and simulcast on Y102 radio.

Lenny Brewster Sports Center is located at 21024 Otoe Road. Take Dale Evans Parkway 1.5 miles north from Highway 18.  The park features 40 acres of grass, a playground and horseshoe pits.  Bring your canopies and chairs, but please, no alcohol, pets or barbecues will be allowed in the park.

Looking for additional Fourth of July fun?

Before we light up the sky you can burn up some tread! Kick off Independence Day weekend with the Firecracker Run 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk Saturday, July 2 with check in starting at the Lenny Brewster Sports Center at 6:45 a.m. and the race at 7:30 a.m. Separate awards are given to men, women and children in various age divisions for runners. Free commemorative race t-shirts are given to the first 50 pre-paid runners. Others can buy them for $10 while supplies last.

Preregistration by June 30 is $15, increasing to $18 through the day of the race; walkers are free but everyone must sign a liability waiver. For information call (760) 240-7880.
