(Victorville) — The MDAQMD is now accepting nominations for its 2010-1011 Exemplar Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions toward the prevention or control of air pollution in the Mojave Desert. Eligible candidates include local businesses, industries, schools, organizations and individuals who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to clean air through the development of voluntary air pollution prevention or control activities/projects within the District’s boundaries.
Last year, Brubaker-Mann of Barstow – a small decorative rock mining and processing facilityreceived the District’s highest honor for achievement in reducing air pollution in the High Desert.
Beginning in pre-recession 2003, the company began upgrading its rock crushing and diesel mobile equipment, including five medium sized front end loaders and two skid steer loaders with newer, cleaner equipment with EPA certified engines. In 2009 the company closed its Gold Quarry plant and replaced several older pieces of equipment at the remaining Soap Mine sitewith newer, lower emitting equipment, thereby cutting dust emissions by minimizing travel
between the two sites. As a result of these actions, fugitive dust emissions were reduced by 33%, while particulate matter emissions from engines were cut by 50%.
Nominations must be postmarked or received at MDAQMD offices by 4:00 P.M on Friday, August 26. The Exemplar Award will be presented during National Pollution Prevention Week, September 19 through 25, 2011.
