(Victorville)- – Each weekday morning Y102 listeners are entertained by radio personality Coleen Quinn. She helps them get their day started with local and celebrity news, trivia, and at 8:30 each day she reads positive news from the High Desert.
“I like to highlight the positive things in our community. I think it is really important. I’m a very positive person and I love my community,” said Quinn.
Coleen was born in Victorville at what was then George Air Force Base. Her parents moved up here while her dad was in his final year of his four years in the military. “They loved it here, so we stayed,” said Quinn. “My parents and my brother still live here, but my sister moved to Florida.”
Growing up Coleen was involved in sports and music. She worked several jobs including waitressing at the old Bob’s Big Boy, “back with it was the only restaurant off of the 15 freeway,” and she worked at the DPSS office.
A life changing event made Coleen take a hard look at what she really wanted to do.
“I was driving and I saw one of those billboards for the Academy of Radio and Television and I decided that was it. I was driving and writing down their phone number at the same time.”
It was as she was finishing up her studies there that the call came in. “They said a station up here was looking for a female personality and they asked if I lived up in ‘Victorville’. I started on July 5th, 1994,” said Quinn.
“I worked hard and learned how to do everything. I wrote commercials, worked at the other stations, learned production, just how to do everything. On air I covered the mid-day spot when that person went on maternity leave, then moved up to mornings,” she explained.
During that time Y102 has consistently been the number one station in the High Desert in adult contemporary music. Coleen has taken that opportunity and uses it to promote positive people and events. “They work hard and they do good work. I like to give them the recognition they deserve, even though most of the time that is not why they are doing the things they do,” Quinn said.
“For example, I had the kids from the college that are performing in Hairspray in and they sang on air. That was fun. I shared a story recently about the Millionaire Mind kids club started by a local 15 year old. I thought that was really cool. There are so many people like that up here. We hear enough of the bad news, that’s why I try to be so positive,” explained Quinn.
“One of the best parts of this job, what I like the most, is giving things away. Oh, and meeting celebrities,” Coleen said with a smile.
Coleen stays active – she still plays softball, pretty much year round. She enjoys spending time with her family – her husband of 12 1/2 years Preston Stone, their kids, and especially their grand kids: a 6 year old granddaughter, 4 year old twins (a boy and a girl), and a two year old granddaughter.
