(Victor Valley)– The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today approved a redistricting plan in a 3 to 2 vote. First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt and 3rd District Supervisor Neil Derry voted against it.
The plan splits the mountain communities into two districts and moves Barstow into the 3rd District, while its surrounding communities remain in the first district.
Before the vote, a number of residents from the mountains and Barstow urged the board to reconsider.
Legislative districts are redrawn every 10 years based on updated census data, and they have to satisfy a number of legal requirements.
The Board with meet Tuesday, Sept. 27th to approve the final boundaries. The new districts must be in effect by November 1st, the state deadline.
This special meeting was the second in the live videoconferencing pilot program available to Victor Valley residents. The new system allows the public to participate or deliver testimony at Board meetings without making the 40-mile trek to San Bernardino.
The Board has encouraged the public to become involved in the process by viewing
