(APPLE VALLEY)- – The St. Mary Hospital Foundation will host its 20th annual Gala at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds this evening.
The theme for this year “Our Legacy Into the Future” is presented by the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Center, the Historic Apple Valley Inn, High Desert Primary Care and Premier Healthcare.
A number of honorees will be recognized for their contributions to the foundation during the year:
Humanitarian of the Year
Alemayehu G. Mariam, Ph. D., is a professor of political science at California State University, San Bernardino. He writes regularly on human rights issues in Ethiopia and Africa. In 1998, he argued before the California Supreme Court in the case of people vs. Peevy, which helped clarify longstanding Miranda rights issues in criminal procedure in California.
Patrons of the Year
George and Mary Newton have been actively involved in the High Desert for many years. The couple believes it is important to be involved in the community. George is an active member of local service clubs and Mary works closely with animal rescue groups. They also feel a special connection to St. Mary Medical Center and the Foundation because they and members of their family have been recipients of the quality care St. Mary provides to its patients.
Samaritan of the Year
Ed Wong is the Chief Financial Officer at St. Mary Medical Center. He exhibits the Medical Center’s values of Service, Excellence, Justice, Dignity and Hospitality, and is an advocate for patients in need of care who lack financial resources.
Young Humanitarian of the Year
Lilly Dawit-Mamo is a junior volunteer at St. Mary Medical Center who has logged more than 300 hours of service since she began in 2007. She is also active in many other nonprofit organizations in the High Desert addressing important issues including childhood obesity and breast cancer awareness, as well as those in need including mentally handicapped and the homeless.
Glee Heikes has been actively involved with St. Mary Medical Center Foundation for many years serving as a board member, gala committee member and in many other areas. She also was a long-time member of the St. Mary Auxiliary now Volunteer Services.
The 20th Annual Foundation Gala begins at 6 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the Gala will benefit the overall future expansion of St. Mary Medical Center and its new Victorville campus. Tickets are $225 a person. Tables with seating for eight people are available for $1,800 to $2,200, depending on table location and advertising space reserved in the Gala program.
