High Desert Daily
(Victorville) Technology is a constantly evolving beast. One day a device is brand new and top of the line, and months down the road it is already becoming obsolete. The changes in our lifestyles are evident when you look at all the technological advances that seem to be happening every hour. The Victorville City Library, along with the San Bernardino County and Riverside County Library systems, embrace these technological changes, making a more enjoyable world for library patrons.
Karen Pearsall Everrett, Librarian at the Victorville City Library, took a moment to talk about the new technologies that the library is harnessing, both online and in the actual building. One of the handiest, and may be unknown, technologies at the Victorville library would be the Playaway, which Everrett broken down for High Desert Daily.
“One of the things that we have really picked up on here at the Victorville Library are our Playaways, which is an all in one audio book. You can get the entire book on a very small device, no larger than an iPod, and is something you can listen to in the car, while you are walking, working, anything that you like to do.”
The Playaway is extremely user friendly, and brings the convenience of other digital audio players into one focused book. The Victorville branch has quite a few books available in this format, and the price to check one out is more than affordable. The fee to checkout a Playaway is $1, and that covers the brand new battery installed at the time of checkout.
Digital is the new medium, and Overdrive is the way to access digital book and audio right from the Internet. San Bernardino County and Riverside County libraries have an online system called Overdrive: it is a portal to check out digital books onto your pc or smart phone, as well as audio books and videos. Audio books and E-Pubs, which tend to be PDF files, are all available for a limited time check out. Check out periods range from 7 to 14 days for digital material, due to licensing. By downloading the Overdrive application, you can view books right on your smart phone.
“It’s really easy to use once you have Overdrive downloaded onto your device. Come on into the library and the reference desk can show you how to search if you are having problems.”
