(Victor Valley)- – The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today initiated its annual holiday Troop Support Program to collect gift cards, gas cards, and pre-paid phone cards for local members of the military deployed overseas.
“As a veteran myself, I know how tough it is to be separated from your family and in harm’s way during the holidays,” said Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt. “Being able to call home and hear the voices of your family members makes the separation a little easier to bear.”
Today’s action by Supervisors authorized the County Veterans Affairs Department to coordinate countywide fundraising efforts for the Support Our Troops 2011 project from November through December 2011. The project will collect gift card, gas cards, andpre-paid phone cards to be distributed to local National Guard units and the family support offices at Fort Irwin and TwentyninePalms. County resources authorized for the project will include Veterans Affairs staff who are responsible for coordination and distribution of the cards, as well as staff from participating departments who will assist with the collections at their respective locations.
Since 2007, San Bernardino County has coordinated a countywide effort in support of deployed military service members and their families during the holiday season. More than $450,000 in donations have been collected and distributed through the troop support program over the past four years.
In response to the success of the troop support program in previous years, the California State Assembly in 2009 named SanBernardino County as the most supportive County to California’s military members and their families. San Bernardino County is home to approximately 350,000 veterans, active military and their families and a half-dozen military installations.
Donations may be made at most county offices. For more information, call (909) 387-5525 or visit: http://hss.sbcounty.gov/va/
