(Apple Valley)– They say it takes a village to raise a child. If that’s true, then Lena Quiñonez could be considered the mayor of that village. Her coordination of Apple Valley’s youth day camp and After School Activities Program has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children.
This is just one of the reasons she was chosen as this year’s Town of Apple Valley Employee of the Year. The announcement was made at the Town’s annual employee awards and recognition dinner held in the Apple Valley Conference Center on December 9. The annual award is the result of peer voting among the employees.
“The Recreation Department is very proud of the work Lena has accomplished over the last year and excited that her co-workers felt the same way,” said Ralph Wright, Parks and Recreation Manager.
Quiñonez, who has worked for the town for nearly six years, has also expanded and improved the Healthy Apple Valley program, a grant-based program that offers activities to improve the health and wellness of the Apple Valley community. It has thrived under her stewardship, expanding to offer popular three-week healthy cooking classes, fitness classes, family activity nights at Civic Center Park, community bike rides, a weekly walking club and much more.
Her co-workers say she “walks the walk” by growing her own vegetables and sharing healthy recipes at work.
“I have a great manager and wonderful co-workers that make coming to work each day exciting and fun,” said Quiñonez. “My part time employees are my inspiration and keep me going when times are stressful. I truly enjoy working here at the Town of Apple Valley and am thankful for all the friends I have made.”
