(Victor Valley)-– Jack H. Brown, chairman of the board of Stater Bros. Markets and the namesake of Jack Brown Hall at Cal State San Bernardino, presented a check for more than $100,000 to CSUSB to supplement the university’s Rose Brown Scholarship fund.
Cal State San Bernardino President Al Karnig and Vice President of University Advancement Larry Sharp accepted the check from Brown, who established the scholarship at CSUSB in 2000 as a tribute to his mother, Rose Brown, on her 80th birthday. Rose Brown passed away last August at the age of 91.
Created specifically to assist widows and single parents raising children alone, the scholarship was established to encourage them to follow in the footsteps of Rose Brown, to “never give up” and to follow their dreams of a college degree.
This year’s Rose Brown Scholarship recipient is Jennifer Sanchez of San Bernardino, a 30-year-old nursing student who is raising an autistic 4-year-old son alone. Sanchez has struggled with the challenges of providing for a special-needs child and putting herself through college while working several jobs.
“It was an honor and privilege to receive this scholarship,” said Sanchez. “It has been a blessing financially and has helped me so that I don’t have to work as many hours. This way, I can spend more time with my son.”
To date, more than $60,000 has been awarded to 62 students. In the past, five $1,000 scholarships were awarded annually to Cal State San Bernardino students who met the eligibility requirements of the scholarship. Starting in 2011-2012, the amount of each scholarship increased to $1,500.
