(Victorville )– The 15 freeway south is closed at Palmdale Road this afternoon after a crash closed all lanes. The California Highway Patrol is on the scene investigating a fatal collision that originally involved a wrong way driver.
Office Weaver with the Victorville CHP said that their dispatch received calls of a wrong way driver on the 15 southbound just before 11:00 this morning. Shortly after that they received calls of a collision involving that driver. The lanes of the freeway were closed around 10:54am.
One person was pronounced dead not long after units arrived. A second person was reportedly pronounced dead just before 1:00pm, according to Weaver.
There were initial reports of a medical helicopter landing on the freeway, but Weaver did not confirm that. She did say that a helicopter was called to take aerial photos of the scene.
The southbound lanes of the freeway will remain closed for the investigation for at least a couple of hours longer, Weaver said. Traffic is heavily backed up in those lanes. Northbound lanes are not blocked, but traffic is very slow due to drivers looking at the activity on the other side of the freeway.
Weaver said alternates around this closure would be Hwy 395, or any of the roads that parallel the 15 freeway, including Amargosa, which was also reportedly very busy.
