(Phelan)– —First District Supervisor candidate Michael Orme attended the Tri-Community Senior Health Fair at Serrano High School on March 22nd. “This is a good example of how the county can work with local communities and non-profits to benefit the community at large,” said Orme as he walked amongst more than 500 senior citizens that visited 60 vendors and witnessed several demonstrations.
“We created this event to provide outreach resources for the more than 2,000 seniors in the Tri-Community area,” said Joyce Harrison, president of the Victor Valley Regional Council on Aging. The event was a cooperative effort of the county’s Department of Aging and Adult Services, the Visiting Nurse Association, Snowline Joint Unified School District and the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Service District, along with the Timberline Lions Club who provided lunch.
“The senior community is a vital resource of knowledge and mentorship to families, schools and volunteers,” said Orme, as many greeted him as a friend of theirs. He added, “We need to embrace the seniors and support them. Though the county needs to balance its budget, cutting senior service funding without developing alternative resources or partnerships is not the way to do it. In fact, that is how the Wrightwood, Phelan, Pinon Hills and El Mirage seniors lost their lunch program in the recent past.” “As your County First District Supervisor, I would make it a priority to find ways to support our seniors throughout the district.
“Michael Orme has never forgotten the Pinon Hills and Phelan seniors — even when he changed jobs from serving as a San Bernardino County First District field representative to serving as a representative for U.S. Congressman Buck McKeon,” said Jerri Plager, President of the Pinon Hills Senior., “When he was representing the county, he assisted the local seniors with numerous projects, including constructing the new ADA walkway; the procurement of new chairs and tables for the center; and he was always available to hear our concerns.”“To this day, he still comes to visit us and listen to our concerns. He not only listens to us, he finds ways to address our concerns even though his job as a Congressional representative keeps him busy. Michael is a person our seniors can count on,” added Plager. Pinon Hills Senior Coordinator Terry Roy, stated, “I am proud to support Michael Orme for County Supervisor. He is the only one that has actually done things for this community and the seniors.”
Phelan Senior President Ann Figona, said, “I met Michael after I was elected president a few months ago. He was respectful and listened to us.” “Others in our group have told me about the many things he had accomplished for our area seniors and I’m pleased to say they too support and respect him.”
