(Victorville) – Golfers Needed!  Come out, support a GREAT cause, and have a fun day of golf and prizes at the Green Tree Golf Course on April 15th.  This tournament is to benefit Kayla Norris and the Never Give Up Hope Foundation.

Pamela Alcaraz, Kayla’s great aunt and organizer of the tournament, explained, “It’s going to be a 4-man scramble. Its $60 per person, and you get 18 holes of golf, the cart and lunch. We’ll also have silent auction items, raffle prizes, and trophies. Its going to be a real fun day.”

This is all to help Kayla Norris and her family. Kayla is a 16 year old junior who attends Silverado High School. For the last year and a half she has been battling Stage 3 Brainstem Glioma. “Its brain cancer that sits in the back of the brain so it affects all of Kayla’s motor skills – talking, moving her arms, all of that,” said Alcaraz. “With this kind of cancer the doctors say two years, I guess no one has made it past two years. But Kayla is going to be the first!”

Kayla and her family have struggled with the medical bills, along with transportation costs getting to Los Angeles for Kayla’s treatments, according to Alcaraz.  “Kayla has had 2 throat surgeries, several surgeries on her brain, and she continues to go to chemo and radiation a couple of times a month all the way down in LA.  She’s gone through a lot in the last year and a half. But she continues to fight, and her motto is ‘never give up hope’. So that’s where we came up with this non-profit organization ‘Never Give up Hope’.”

The foundation was started to help the Norris family with all of the medical expenses, but Alcaraz said that they hope to branch out and start helping other families that are going through the same situation. “Because even with insurance, if you’re lucky enough to have insurance, there’s still so many out of pocket expenses that it is just really tough. Kayla has always given to others, and now she needs help.”

Before her illness Kayla did a lot of charity work – reading to the elderly, feeding the vets at Thanksgiving and Veterans Day, helping build Rose Parade floats, and Relay for Life. Even through battling her illness she is still continuing to do all of her charity work. This year Kayla has two of her own teams in Relay for Life that are trying to raise $3000 for the American Cancer Society.

Another goal the Never Give Up Hope Foundation is working toward is to raise awareness of this particular form of cancer.  “There’s not a lot of information regarding this type of cancer – Brainstem Glioma. I tried to learn about it from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Society. There’s nothing out there that warns parents that when their kids are complaining of headaches, listen! They’re not always trying to get out of going to school. It could be something more. So you have to watch for the signs – dizziness, sudden loss of attention span, things like that.”

Kayla has a website: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kikilala95 “It is for families that are going through this, a place where people can send them messages and Christina (Kayla’s mom) updates it and let’s people know whats going on with Kayla, how’s she feeling, and different things they are trying to do,” said Alcaraz. “And Kayla and her mom go on the site every night and see if any there are any new updates or messages, and she reads them to Kayla. She loves to hear from people.”
