(Victorville) School is out, the textbooks are gone, time for some fun, am I right? How about a summer filled with magic, exotic animals, puppet shows, music and cartooning? Look no further than your local Victorville City Library, as they have everything mentioned above and much more in store for this year’s Summer Reading Program.
Krystal Morgan, Library Clerk at the Victorville City Library, took a moment to fill us in on what to expect from the library this summer. “The Summer Reading Program is something that we do every year,” commented Morgan. “It’s a great opportunity for teens, kids, even adults to come in and read. We give incentives, especially for the children; it gives them incentives to read and keep up their reading comprehension during the summer, when everything starts to lag.”
Now, many hear the words “Summer Reading Program” and automatically think of boredom. Not so, and not here. With programming designed for children, young adults, and adults, the library offers some excitement and wonder for people of all ages. “We have magicians, animal shows, all kinds of stuff for the kids. We have a few programs we are doing for the adults as well, including six different programs beginning June 26th with Adventure Quest.”
The adult program schedule:
July 3rd is Michael Mezmer “From Harry Potter to Harry Houdini-Books are Magic”. July 10th is the Cartoon Draw Shop – guest speakers will show attendees how to draw different cartoon and manga characters.
July 17th is the Historic Impressionist Peter Smalls.
July 24th features William Zeitler.
July 31st has Hi-Country Harmonaires.
The programs for adults sound highly entertaining, but the children’s programming is not to be outdone, as it brings together animals, magic and something that makes everyone smile: puppets. “The children have six programs as well. Forever Wild Animal Sanctuary will be doing a presentation on June 28th. July 5th we will host a magic show by Joel Ward. July 12th is Forest Explorer, presented by the San Bernardino National Forest. We will have a puppeteer come in on July 19th. The Art of Mime will be on July 26th, and another puppet show on August 2nd.”
Morgan stressed the importance of signing up, as these programs tend to fill up fast, especially the shows for the children. “The children shows usually get really packed, so you need to be in the summer reading program to get a ticket.”
Being in the program not only provides the wide range of shows listed above, but also provides incentives to those who choose to pick up a book this summer as part of the program. “Some of the prizes they can win are books, awarded each week. They can win things like gift certificates, and food coupons for the teens and children. We are also going to be giving out grand prizes as well. It’s great for the children, its great for the adults: especially since they are going to be here with their children. They might as well win stuff for themselves.”
What’s the best part about the Summer Reading Program? It’s free! How can you beat that price?
