(Victor Valley) – For the sixth year in a row, the County of San Bernardino has been honored for producing one of the best government budget documents in North America.
The Board of Supervisors has recognized the County’s budget staff for receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The award represents a significant achievement by the County of San Bernardino and reflects the county’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
“The award is a great source of pride to the county’s budget staff,” said David Wert spokesman for the county. “Putting together the annual budget is a long, arduous process that consumes several months each year. The award is an affirmation to the county’s budget staff that their product is among the best is North America, and that they have succeeded in producing something that serves the public well.”
To receive the budget award the county had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories to receive the award.
Many of these awards are given throughout North American – 125 agencies in California have won them. Wert explained that it is still quite an accomplishment considering that there are thousands of agencies in California alone that were eligible. It is open to all cities, counties, school districts, water districts, and other special districts.
“San Bernardino County is consistently complimented on its use of easy-to-read graphs and performance measurements. The county and the judges believe it is important for the annual budget to be something anyone can read and understand. After all, it is their money,” Wert said.
“The Board of Supervisors and county staff work hard each year to create a budget document that not only responsibly allocates the county’s assets, but also clearly communicates to the public what we do with their resources,” Board of Supervisors Chair Josie Gonzales said. “This award shows we have been successful.”
