San Manuel Band Of Mission Indians To Sponsor CSUSB 6th Annual Disability Sports Festival

By Staff Reports

(Victor Valley)–The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians will serve as the sole sponsor for the sixth annual DisAbility Sports Festival at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 6

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians sponsorship will allow disabled athletes to participate in the DisAbility Sports Festival free of charge, said festival director Aaron Moffett, professor of kinesiology at Cal State San Bernardino.

“The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians have long been hailed as a valued community partner for their contributions to programs that will make an ongoing positive difference in the lives of others,” Moffett said. “We’re grateful for their support.”

The purpose of the DisAbility Festival is to increase the sports opportunities for athletes with disabilities and thereby increase their quality of life and health, Moffett said.

The event promotes physical activity and sports for people of all ages with disabilities. Participants will learn from Paralympians and other elite coaches in 20 different sports or physical activities. More than 800 athletes from California and several other states are expected to participate, including many wounded warrior veterans.

“We want to give athletes in Southern California an event where they can compete in sports such as wheelchair and standing basketball, tennis, soccer, wall climbing, swimming, hand cycling and more,” said Moffett. “Each sport will be directed and coached by people with disabilities. It’s a real display of all our abilities.”

The all-day sports festival was launched in 2007.

All of the sports at this event will be adapted to accommodate the respective disabilities, Moffett said.
