CSUSB Recognized As A Military Friendly School

By Staff Reports

(Victor Valley)– – For the third year in a row, Cal State San Bernardino has been distinguished as a Military Friendly School, according to a national survey by G.I. Jobs magazine. The honor ranks CSUSB among the top 15 percent of all United States colleges, universities and trade schools for their service to the military community.

The 2013 list includes more than 1,700 schools that represent the top tier of U.S. colleges, universities and trade schools doing the most to educate America’s veterans, according to the G.I. Jobs website. The website notes that these schools offer military students the best services, programs, discounts, scholarships, clubs, networking and staff.

The G.I. Jobs website (www.militaryfriendlyschools.com) also explains the Post-9/11 GI Bill and offers articles and advice for planning and executing a military education. This is the fourth year that G.I. Jobs magazine has presented its Military Friendly Schools list. With more than 12,000 VA-approved schools vying for the title, the competition was fierce.

“It’s very rewarding for the university to receive this recognition, because our faculty and staff have worked extremely hard and are very committed to serving the military community,” said CSUSB President Tomás Morales. “We are happy to open our arms and welcome military veterans, and the most recent example of that is the new Veterans Success Center, which opened on campus this year.”

The university’s Veterans Success Center offers services and resources for student veterans, such as tutoring, psychological counseling, career services and support. It also serves as a place to assist in the transition from military to academic life. The university’s Student Success Initiative Fee made funding for the center possible. Coordinator Marci Daniels, a U.S. Army veteran, directs the center.

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The list can be found at the Military Friendly Schools website at http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/mfsList.aspx.

Cal State San Bernardino and other institutions on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.
