First 5 San Bernardino Encourages Early Reading With Jumpstart’s Read For The Record® Campaign

By Staff Reports

(Victor Valley) First 5 San Bernardino is partnering with Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® campaign to encourage early literacy development and school readiness for preschool and kindergarten children.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a national reading celebration that encourages adults and children to set a record for the largest shared reading experience on the same day, achieving over seven million participating readers across the nation since 2006. First 5 San Bernardino is donating 2,000 books for Read for the Record activities to be held on October 4th, 2012 at over 15 libraries, school districts, and child development centers in San Bernardino County.

Donated books include the selected read for this year’s Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® campaign, Ladybug Girl & the Bug Squad by David Soman and Jacky Davis, a New York Times Bestseller. First 5 San Bernardino’s fifth year partnership with the campaign includes child development centers in Chino Valley Unified School District, Fontana Unified School District, San Bernardino Valley Unified School District, San Bernardino Valley College, Hesperia Unified School District, Ontario-Montclair School District, and several libraries in the San Bernardino County Library system from Yucaipa to Montclair. The day provides an opportunity to rally children into enjoying their reading experience while developing early literacy skills. One adult reader and a child at home to large groups in public facilities all count towards this record-breaking initiative.

“Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a call to action for our communities to recognize the importance of quality early education, especially for our most vulnerable children,” said Karen E. Scott, Executive Director of First 5 San Bernardino. “When children start behind, they tend to stay behind. First 5 San Bernardino is proud to support this campaign.”

Read for the Record is the first event in a series of child literacy development activities to follow in First 5 San Bernardino’s annual “Read Early, Read Aloud!” campaign, which include All Aboard the Reading Railroad events at Victor Valley Museum on October 6th, 2012 and San Bernardino County Museum on November 3rd, 2012.
