(Barstow) – There is an event coming up where you and help raise funds for cancer research and spend some quality time with your furry friends. I’m talking about the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life event on Saturday, October 21st.
Libby Geiger, chairperson for the Bark for Life event, said, “The American Cancer Society Bark for Life honors the care-giving qualities of our canine companions. Its an event for the dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. So by supporting Bark for Life you help the American Cancer Society save lives and help us move closer to a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”
This fun event gives pet parents an opportunity to bring out their fur babies to keep them active and to participate in contest and games, including best in show, best owner/dog look-alike, costume contest, and smallest dog and largest dog.
Demonstrations will be put on by the Barstow Police Department’s canine unit, and hopefully from the canine unit from the Marine Corp Logistics Base, Geiger said. The Humane Society will be there to inform pet parents about shots and tags for their pets, and maybe even an adoption clinic.
“Last year was our very first year for the Bark for Life. We are going to continue to carry that on, and let people know that animals are very good companions when you’re just not feeling well,” Geiger said. “It is also to keep Relay for Life out there for the community to know that we do things other than just one weekend a year. That we do Relay for Life 365 days a year.”
The rules, or doggie do’s and don’ts for the event: dogs have to be on a leash no longer than 6 ft, pet parents are responsible for their pets including picking up after them and keeping them under control. All canines must be happy, healthy, and fully vaccinated (must show proof).
Bark for Life will be held at Stringham Park on Rimrock Road in Barstow on October 21st. Registration begins at 1:00pm. The actual demonstrations begin at 2:00pm, runs until 5:00. Registration fee is $5 for your first canine, $3 for any additional canine.
For more information or to pre-register, contact Libby Geiger 760-447-2004 or e-mail email@example.com.
“Just come up and have a good time and let everyone see how proud you are of your companion,” Geiger concluded.
