(Hesperia)– In Hesperia, wonders and untold tales of mystery await you. Adventure is just around the corner, and so is danger and intrigue. No, it’s not the newest movie theater or Redbox machine to hit the desert; it’s the Hi Desert Book Oasis Used Book Store, back with new hours and tons of books.
July 7th marked the grand re-opening of the Hi Desert Book Oasis in Hesperia, which brought the community together to celebrate the continuation of a local High Desert business. The Hi Desert Book Oasis is not new to the desert, but there is a new owner. Former Owner Lou Grantt originally opened the bookstore in Lucerne back in 2008, but relocated to Hesperia in 2010. It was 2012 when Grantt decided to pass the torch and sell the bookstore, and that is where new owner Donna Penman stepped up.
“Well, my daughter Alyssa runs Rely Local, and we were having an event here (at the Hi Desert Book Oasis) called a cash mob in April. So Alyssa and Steve Sipe, of D’Vine Wine Bar, put the event together and we mobbed the store; people came in and bought books and things like that. Lou has some serious health issues, so she put the word out that she was interested in selling the store. I knew her from the event, so I talked to her and she had mentioned that she was interested in selling.” The papers were signed the 31st of May and as of June 1st, Donna was the new owner. But the former owner still comes in from time to time. “Lou comes in once in a while, and she is actually going to come back in and do a book signing later on.”
When asked why Penman decided to go forward with buying the used book store, she answered, “We are a family of readers, always have been. It just seemed like a really good fit for us.” Both Penman and her husband formerly owned a very successful computer programming business, but after a series of health issues, they lost the business and their home, but as Penman puts it: “Its just stuff; I did not think we would get the chance to do anything like this again.”
Located across from Victor Valley College on Jacaranda Avenue, the Hi Desert Book Oasis is relaunching itself not only with a new owner, but with new hours as well. Penman saw the need to expand the hours to make the store more readily available to those wanting to drop by. Stores hours changed from being open Monday through Friday from 12-5pm to now being open Monday through Friday from 10-7pm and 12-5pm on Saturdays. Penman is also looking to add more to the store eventually.
“Slowly but surely we will have story time, we are trying to expand the children’s area, the young adult area. There is such a range between the ages 7-12 on what kids read; I mean, I have 5th graders coming in and asking me for the Twilight trilogy, and I have 6th graders come in looking for Nancy Drew. I would like kids to start reading the classics again. I am trying to find books like Rudyard Kipling, Treasure Island, all of the classics.”
Hi Desert Book Oasis offers extremely affordable books from a plethora of genres, and also offers a trade in program for those looking to turn their old books into new reads. Yet, it’s more than just the books, as Penman explains the oasis as being, “A place where you can relax and recompose yourself.”
