Victor Valley College Foundation receives $25,000 grant to help students succeed in math
(Victorville)- – Students struggling in math will soon have easier access to tutors, study materials and dedicated computers for online homework help thanks to a grant from Southern California Edison (SCE). SCE recently granted $25,000 to the Victor Valley College Foundation (Foundation) for scholarships along with supplies, equipment, and tutoring assistance at the new Victor Valley College Math Success Center. Together with SCE, the Foundation aims to change the equation for the future of college students in the High Desert.
College level math is a clear stumbling block, a kind of “Common Denominator” in the path toward degree completion and transfer ability for thousands of students annually. “Before the success center, math tutoring took place in undedicated, multi-purpose areas with limited staff hours,” explains Dr. Rolando Regino, Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. “The success center is really vital because over half of our math courses have online homework assignments; we have a desperate need for tutors and computers and we are so happy and so thankful to SCE for making this dream come true.”
The funds provided through the grant will fund computers, tutors, and study materials along with some upbeat and inspirational décor for the math success center. In addition, twelve scholarships will be awarded for students pursuing the new Associate of Science Transfer degree in Math. For the first time in California history, community college students who complete a new AA-T or AS-T will be guaranteed admission to the California State University (CSU) system.
“We aim to power future generations to greatness by focusing on the five areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math,” says Nancy Jackson, Southern California Edison’s Regional Manager of Public Affairs. “By inspiring today’s students to achieve a brighter future, Victor Valley College is leading the way for students to improve their lives, find jobs, and ultimately succeed in life.”
