(Cajon Pass)- – A wind driven fire, named the Devore Fire, burned approx 375 acres and caused the closure of the 15 freeway in both directions for about 6 hours Monday.

The fire started on east side of the 15 near Blue Cut around 10:55 am, and then jumped the freeway, burning through the center divider and then down the hill on the west side of the highway. It moved quickly, spurred by windy, dry conditions. Winds were sustained at 12-15 mph, with gusts to 26 mph.

The 15 southbound was closed at the 138, and northbound was closed at first at the 215, but then the closure was moved to the 210. Even the 215 north was closed out of San Bernardino at Palm Drive. Lanes were finally reopened right around 5:00pm, but the back up continued late into the night. The closure sent many commuters through the mountain communities caused traffic tie ups there.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for the Mathews Ranch area in the Cajon Pass. Although no structures were lost, about 30-40 people had to leave their homes.

8 air tankers and 3 helicopters along with 450 fire personnel were on scene fighting the blaze. The fire was 10% contained at the last update, and full containment is expected at 6:00pm this evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
