NPR Science Correspondent Joe Palca To Speak CSUSB

(Victor Valley)– – National Public Radio science correspondent Joe Palca will be the featured speaker at the third annual Gerald M. Scherba Endowed Lecture Series at Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The free lecture, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the CSUSB Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center. Parking on campus is $5.

Palca, an award-winning journalist who holds a Ph.D. in psychology from UC Santa Cruz, has for 20 years covered a broad range of science topics and issues from biomedical research to astronomy.

He has won numerous awards, including the National Academies Communications Award, the Science-in-Society Award of the National Association of Science Writers, the American Chemical Society James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for interpreting chemistry for the public, the American Association for the Advancement of Science Journalism Prize and the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Writing.

The Gerald M. Scherba Endowed Program Lecture Series at CSUSB offers the public a clear understanding of the natural sciences and what they contribute to the world.

The science speaker series is named after Cal State San Bernardino founding faculty member Gerald Scherba, the first science professor hired in 1962 by then-San Bernardino-Riverside State College founding president, John M. Pfau. The college opened in 1965.

Scherba first served as chair for the Natural Sciences Division. In 1968, he became the first dean of academic affairs at Cal State San Bernardino. In 1984, he was named director for the California State University Field Station for Research and Education in Zyzzx, Calif. He retired in 1994 and passed away in 2001.
