(Hesperia)– – The City of Hesperia, Hesperia Unified School District and Hesperia Chamber of Commerce welcomed 24 students Thursday for the Seventh Annual Youth in Government Day.
The goal of this event is to educate students about local government and encourage them to become more active in their community. Students are provided with a foundation in responsible citizenship, exposing them to the issues faced by today’s civic leaders and enabling them to learn the role and processes of local government.
Student who participated on Thursday represented Hesperia, Oak Hills, Sultana, Hesperia Christian and Canyon Ridge high schools.
The day-long event included an orientation and welcome briefing, job shadowing, a luncheon program sponsored by KO’s Pizza, a “Meet the Mayor” question and answer session and participation in a Mock City Council Meeting.
“We had a great group of students this year,” said Georgia Graham, Youth in Government Day Coordinator. “The success of this event is made possible through our partnership with the Hesperia Unified School District and the Hesperia Chamber of Commerce.”
The students participated in the program for 6 hours. Over the years, this program has seen more than 160 students participate.
