Stick To Your Fitness Resolutions

(Victor Valley)–New Year’s resolutions are set each year with the best of intentions. Then life happens and the new changes that began in January are soon fizzled out by end of February, sometimes sooner. There are few strategies that can be used to help you to stick to your health and fitness resolutions.

Variety is the spice of life. One of the main reasons people quit exercising is they get bored with their routine. The find a challenging program in a fitness magazine, web site or from a friend and do the routine over and over again every day. We naturally want to have mental stimulation and doing the same thing in the gym is not in our DNA. The key is to put a little homework in online looking up new forms of exercise you enjoy. If you were doing a weightlifting routine, try a CrossFit workout. If you were doing crunches everyday at home while you watched TV, now try a cardio kickboxing DVD. If you are taking an aerobics class and are getting bored, try a Zumba class. Variety is the only way to keep your mind from wandering instead of focusing on the exercise.

Do it or Diet. A diet is a word that needs to be removed from your vocabulary. A diet is meant to have a beginning and an end point. If you truly want to lose weight and keep it off then you need to adopt a healthy lifestyle change where you eat nutritious foods for the long run. Fad diets that promise quick results in 30 days or fat loss pills that a famous singer endorses are not the answer. Spend some time in the kitchen experimenting with recipes you find online. I always say: “If you crave it, cook it”. This applies to all junk food including burgers, pizza, cookies and pies. When you find a healthy recipe for your favorite junk food, you get the taste that you’re craving without all the calories. Never ending motivation. To stay on track to your short term and long term goals, you must constantly ask yourself why you’re working out. Do you want to be around longer for your children and grandchildren? Do you want to have the ability to hike with your spouse during the summer? Do you want to reduce the pain you feel in your knees, back and hips? There is no wrong answer to why you exercise since everyone is driven by a different purpose. However, many people stop thinking about their why and, in turn, lose motivation. It’s vital to pick a reason that will strongly resonate with you. If you exercise for the same reason as your friends and family, it might not stick. Find your personal motivating factor that will push you to exercise through the rough times.
