(Hesperia)– On Saturday, July 13, Hesperia Animal Shelter hosted an Open House complete with hot dogs, tacos, a bounce house and face painting, to help promote adoptions during their competition in the ASPCA/Rachel Ray 100K Challenge. The Challenge, which goes on through August 31, 2013, is a competition between 50 shelters across the United States for $600,000 in grant prizes, including a grand prize of $100,000.
As of July 12, the Hesperia Animal Shelter had saved 350 pets. Compared to last year, the shelter’s adoptions are at 150%. At the end of June 2012, the shelter had 200 adoptions. At the end of June 2013, they had found 300 pets a new home. At the Open House, more than 50 pets went to their fur-ever homes.
After walking around the Cat Room or taking a few strolls through the Dog Aisles, families stood in a long line waiting their turn to fill out paperwork to bring their pet home. Many families, like the Solorzano’s, came out to the Open House in hopes of bringing a new member into their household. With her daughter and Chocolate, their newly-adopted lab mix in tow, Mrs. Solorzano told High Desert Daily, “We already have a black lab, so we wanted a second lab. We’re looking forward to having another puppy at home.”
Little did the Barela’s know they would be falling in love with 2 kittens when they walked into the cat room. The couple, who came to the Open House without planning to adopt, told High Desert Daily, “We walked in and they were both jumping at us, sticking out their paws like ‘Come over here and play with us.’ We had to get both of them because they were together playing and we can’t separate them.”
If you are interested in adopting a pet to add to your family or to start a fur family, right now is the best time to adopt from Hesperia Animal Shelter. Suzanne Edson, Hesperia Animal Control Supervisor, took time from the Open House to speak with High Desert Daily. “Every Tuesday we announce the special of the week. All through the adoption challenge, we’re going to have a $15 special every week. They could go on our Facebook page and we post what those specials are for the week. We’ll have cats and kittens. We’ll have Chihuahuas. Whatever we have a lot of.”
