(Victor Valley)– On July 26, Weezer played to a sold-out crowd of over 80,000 fans at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa. An alternative rock band formed in 1992, the present lineup of Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Brian Bell, and Scott Shriner, has been making music together since 2001.
The sun had set and Weezer, scheduled to take the stage at 8:15, was on time, and without an opening act, which was fine because that meant more music by Weezer (or did it). Those all-familiar chords of “Hash Pipe” set fans into a frenzied screaming, setting the tone for the rest of the show. Weezer played fan favorites like “Beverly Hills,” “Undone – The Sweater Song” and “Buddy Holly” among many other hits from their 9 albums.
The dynamic within the band and with the audience is what sets the show for any concert and Weezer hardly disappointed. Band members showed versatility as Shriner took over as lead vocals in “Dope Nose” and Bell in “Keep FIshin,’” which led Cuomo to play guitar riffs and interact with the audience. Several times, Cuomo held out his microphone to the audience where fans were heard singing (or shouting) lyrics and the “hip hip’s” of “Island in the Sun” and “oh oh’s” of Perfect Situation. Instead of the band members going into solos on their instruments, each sang a part of “Pork and Beans” as Cuomo introduced the band. Weezer ended the set in just over an hour with all four band members taking hits on the drums alongside of Wilson.
