(Victor Valley)– The Veterans Success Center at Cal State San Bernardino will celebrate the United States Marine Corps’ 238th birthday on Friday, Nov. 1, from 6-9 p.m., at the campus’s Obershaw Dining Room.
The dinner and program are free. Donations to the Student Veterans Success Initiative Scholarship will be accepted. RSVP to Kenny Jacobs at firstname.lastname@example.org. Dress is semi-formal; parking at the university is $5 per vehicle.
The U.S. Marine Corps was founded during the American Revolution when a committee of the Continental Congress met to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines to fight at sea and on shore. The resolution was adopted on Nov. 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines.
Each year, the Marine Corps marks its birthday with a celebration of the spirit that has compelled thousands of men and women to defend the United States as part of the corps.
“It’s important to teach and pass on our traditions to future Marines and share them with the community so that we can maintain our proud heritage well into the future,” said Reuben Perales, a USMC veteran, CSUSB student and committee chair for this year’s celebration.
The program includes welcome remarks by CSUSB President Tomás Morales; the keynote address will be delivered by Cheryl R. Brown, state assembly member of the 47th District and CSUSB alumna (B.A. social and behavioral science).
The presentation of colors will be conducted by Fontana High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Cadets. The invocation will be led by Arthur Cuellar, Chaplain of the Disabled American Veterans, San Bernardino Chapter 12.
The event will also feature the “Table of the Fallen,” presented by Arroyo Valley High School’s Army ROTC, and a cake-cutting ceremony by the oldest and youngest Marine attending the event.
Richard Valdez, commander of Disabled American Veterans San Bernardino Chapter 12 and senior vice commander of the Department of California DAV, will deliver closing remarks.
This will mark the third military birthday celebration hosted by the CSUSB Veterans Success Center within the last five weeks: The U.S. Air Force birthday was commemorated on Sept. 27; the U.S. Navy’s birthday was celebrated on Oct. 14, both at CSUSB. The VSC is committed to honor and pay tribute to every branch of the military as it marks an official anniversary.
The event is sponsored by the Tossetti Family, Fontana High School JROTC, Arroyo High School JROTC, [desi]gn cakes & cupcakes, Coussoulis Arena and Sodexo.
