(Victor Valley)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

People with diabetes depend on certain prescription and over the counter products to manage the disease. But the Food and Drug Administration is warning people to beware of illegal products,  some of which can cause serious harm.

FDA National Health Fraud Coordinator Gary Coody says the agency recently warned 15 companies about selling diabetes products in violation of federal law:

“These products are sold as dietary supplements, alternative medicines, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. These products claimed – among other things – to lower blood sugar naturally, and even to prevent complications like kidney disease.’’

Coody says such products typically make claims such as being natural and safe. FDA advises consumers to talk with their health care providers to help to tell the good from the bad.
