(Victorville)– The nonprofit organization Benefit Everyone, Assist Recreation & Sports, also known as B.E.A.R.S., gave away 174 bicycles and helmets, to children who showed a need and achieved high performance in school, in Victorville on December 4th at their Doris Davies Memorial Bicycle Giveaway held at the High Desert Event Center, formerly the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds.
Each public elementary school serving Victorville students participated, including all Victor Elementary School District Schools, Eagle Ranch and Morgan-Kincaid from the Adelanto Elementary School District, and Hollyvale from the Hesperia Unified School District. Even children from the county Head Start Program participated.
Larry Huber, B.E.A.R.S. Treasurer said, “This event would not be possible if it were not for the support of our community year-after-year. On behalf of the B.E.A.R.S., we want to thank our financial contributors including Wal-Mart Store #1588; Swanson, Graham, Russo & Thomas Accountants, Inc.; Midway Home Solutions; In-Shape Health Clubs, LLP; Green, De Bortnowsky & Quintanilla, LLP; Donna Taylor; Ben & Becky Wasserman; ICR Staffing; Jim Kennedy; and Terry Caldwell.”
It was an exciting day for many children who received a bike, visited with Santa, and enjoyed cookies sponsored by the Victorville Police and the Citizens on Patrol. Special thanks go out to the Victorville Police and Fire Explorers, the Serrano High School California Scholarship Federation Club, the High Desert Event Center staff, and many volunteers who helped assemble the bicycles.
Larry Huber said, “The B.E.A.R.S. are here to continue with Doris’ Legacy. Doris touched all our lives and we are all better for it. There will always be a little part of Doris in each of us. When you feel like giving, that is Doris. When you feel like helping, that is Doris. And when you feel like even the small things you do can make a difference, well, that is Doris!”
