WHO: Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC)
WHAT: Free 8th Annual 5K Walk/Run & Fitness Expo
WHEN: Saturday, March 8, 2014. On-site registration/check-in: 7:00 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.; Walk/Run starts at 8:30 a.m.
WHERE: ARMC, 400 North Pepper Avenue in Colton
COURSE: 5K (3.1 miles) begins at ARMC and loops through local streets east of the Medical Center so that participants return and finish in front of the hospital.
WHY: Join ARMC for a fun morning at the free 5K Walk/Run and Fitness Expo, a public service outreach event designed to raise interest in regular physical exercise and healthy eating to combat the rising obesity and diabetes rates within the County of San Bernardino. The event’s free Fitness Expo will include Tai Chi and Judo demonstrations on stage; live Hip Hop dance-along warm-ups; free foot and/or body massages; a rock climbing wall; a fun PGA Neighborhood Golf activity for all ages; boot camps with push-ups and other fun challenges; Firefighter Academy fitness challenges; an obstacle course courtesy of Rialto Racquet and Fitness Center; basic health screenings and stroke assessments; stay-healthy information courtesy of multiple exhibitors; and much more.
All ages and physical profiles are welcome, but only those who wish to compete for speed need do so. It is first and foremost a Walk/Run with the hopes that the event will inspire residents to adopt a 10,000-steps-a-day walking habit. The first 600 participants to check in will receive T-shirts, and the next 1,500 to check in will receive wristbands. An awards presentation for 16-age categories will take place as participants return from the route. Note: Baby strollers are permitted for walkers, and all participants are asked to please leave pets at home. Registration is free, and interested participants may sign up at www.arrowheadmedcenter.org, where more information, maps, frequently asked questions, and photos are also available. New this year is wireless timing which means that participants can have instant results posted to Facebook or Twitter when they cross the finish line by downloading the free ITS YOUR RACE app http://ARMC5K.itsyourrace.com to smart phones and connecting their registration to social media sites.
More than 30 percent of adults and about 46 percent of children in the county are obese even though regular exercise can help prevent obesity as well as other health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this event is simply to encourage county residents of all ages to enrich their quality of life by improving their general health and fitness.
