An hour a day of moderate to vigorous play. That’s what federal health experts think kids need to help them be healthy and keep their weight under control. But data from a 2012 national survey of young people indicates most 12- to 15-year-olds don’t get it.
Researcher Tala Fakhouri of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
“Only 1 every 4 young teens met national physical activity guidelines.”
Active boys’ most common activity was basketball. Active girls favored running.
But teens who reported doing less physical activity also were more likely to report being obese. Notably in boys, the percentage who were physically active for an hour a day fell as weight rose.
The findings are in a National Center for Health Statistics data brief.
