(Victor Valley)– The Board of Trustees for San Bernardino County Employees’ Retirement Association (SBCERA) has selected Gary Amelio, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Santa Barbara County Employees’ Retirement System as their new CEO. On behalf of more than 33,000 members and beneficiaries with 17 participating agencies, SBCERA Board Chairman Dave Williams announced, “The CEO position is critical to the continued success of our retirement system and our Board is very pleased to have attracted such an accomplished and well respected individual to lead this organization. Gary is a true professional and we are fortunate to have him join our team. Mr. Amelio will be joining the SBCERA organization in early May.”
Reached for comment on the Board’s selection, Mr. Amelio stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join such an established and reputable public fund, as SBCERA. Career moves like this are rare and tremendous events in a professional life. I’ve been fortunate to serve some esteemed organizations during my three decade career, and in particular my most recent post in Santa Barbara County. I look forward to working with the Board, staff and related constituencies to continue to move SBCERA forward by strengthening the financial position and member service support of this well established organization.”
Prior to his most recent position in Santa Barbara, Mr. Amelio served as Executive Director of the San Francisco Employees’ Retirement System. He also served as Executive Director of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, which administers the Thrift Savings Plan (401k-like plan) for the U.S. government. Prior to assuming these roles, Mr. Amelio served in top executive management positions in the private sector in the banking and insurance industry dealing with corporate qualified retirement, nonqualified deferred compensation, executive bonus and welfare plans. As an attorney, he also served as legal counsel on ERISA, tax and fiduciary matters.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and its law school, Mr. Amelio is a member of various professional organizations and is a frequent guest speaker both nationally and internationally. He has received numerous national awards recognizing his expertise and management skills in the individual accounts retirement industry.
