(Victor Valley)– Cal State San Bernardino’s Veterans Success Center and the Student Veterans Organization will co-host a ceremony, “Remembering the Sacrifice,” as a tribute to fallen military service members on Wednesday, May 21, at 9 a.m., on the south lawn of the Pfau Library.
The event, which commemorates Memorial Day on campus, is free and open to the campus community.
The welcome address will be given by Brian Haynes, CSUSB vice president of student affairs. The colors will be presented the CSUSB Air Force ROTC Det. 002, followed by a keynote address by Chief Joshua Tripp, U.S. Navy, from the Navy Recruiting District in San Diego.
A tribute to the “Fallen Soldier” will be performed by the Sunburst Youth Academy from Los Alamitos, followed by a flag-folding ceremony and a 21-Gun Salute by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard, Post 6476 in Colton.
In addition, there will be a community service opportunity for CSUSB students in support of Memorial Day. Students are invited to volunteer at Riverside National Cemetery’s Medal of Honor Memorial from noon to 3:15 p.m., to decorate the graves of the fallen with American flags and flowers.
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is observed each year on the last Monday of May. One of the first official Memorial Day proclamations was made in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, who was serving as commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. This began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of all the Union and Confederate service members at Arlington National Cemetery.
The first 50 volunteers to RSVP will be provided lunch and transportation by bus to Riverside National Cemetery. The bus will pick up passengers at 11:30 a.m. at the campus’s turn-around. Pre-registration is required. Contact Jaime Espinoza at (909) 537-5195 or email email@example.com to reserve your spot.
CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus will host its own Memorial Day observance on Friday, May 23.
Also, the university will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26. Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 27.
