What’s In An E-Cigarette?

By Staff Reports

Some e-cigarettes contain the addictive drug nicotine. And many people wonder about the health effects of e-cigarettes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposes to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products, and:

  • ban sales to people under 18
  • require companies to report ingredients, including potentially harmful ones
  • mandate health warnings
  • and bar product claims about reduced risk unless FDA confirms science supports the claims and public health would be better off.

The FDA’s Mitch Zeller, who directs tobacco regulation, says people should be leery of claims about e-cigarettes:

“It is buyer beware, and that’s compounded by misperceptions that many people hold that products like e-cigarettes absolutely are safer and less harmful.”
