Active For Healthy Hearts

A study indicates that even if a woman is overweight or obese at middle age, being physically active even at a low to moderate level could help reduce the risk of heart disease.

At Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, researcher Unab Khan saw this in seven years of data on 866 overweight or obese women ages 42 to 52.

“Physical activity protected them from developing metabolic syndrome, which is a condition that is known to significantly increase one’s risk of getting heart disease.”

Metabolic syndrome includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar and triglycerides, which is a kind of fat; low HDL, or good, cholesterol; and a large waistline.

The study in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
