Just keeping going can help seniors keep going. Researchers saw this in two groups of more than 800 people each, who were 70 to 89 years old.
One did moderate physical activity; the other got health education. All were considered at the start to be at risk of mobility disability – losing the ability to walk a quarter of a mile.
University of Florida researcher Marco Pahor says that, after an average of two and a half years, active seniors were less likely to show mobility disability:
“The incidence of major mobility disability was 30.1 percent in the physical activity group and 35.5 percent in the health education group.”
The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
