(Victor Valley)—Seasoned higher education attorney Abigail Byman has been appointed director of academic labor relations for California State University, San Bernardino.
Byman said she is looking forward to beginning her new position on Aug. 4, particularly because of the important, enjoyable and very challenging nature of labor relations work. Her hands-on experience is extensive and will help in faculty labor relations and academic personnel matters.
“She will play a vital role in working collaboratively with our faculty, union and staff,” said Andrew Bodman, university provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Byman graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in Minnesota, and later went on to receive her juris doctorate from the University of Denver College of Law. After furthering her education, she practiced in the office of general counsel at both Loyola University of Chicago and the University of Scranton for a combined 32 years.
In 2010, Byman started Higher Education Legal Solutions, Inc., a consulting and legal services firm in Pennsylvania. As president, she provided in-house style services to colleges and universities, including policy work, training and document review.
Byman said she believes there is no better employer than a university. About the personnel at CSUSB she said, “I have been made to feel very comfortable by the staff I have already met, and I’m looking forward to meeting more of the faculty.” In regard to the city itself, “And, of course, the location can’t be beat.”
