Mojave Flick Review: Lucy

Editor’s note: We all love movies, but rather than ask a syndicated columnist who has never visited our beautiful High Desert, we commissioned our own local movie critic: Nolan P. Smith to review films and give us a local perspective. Enjoy!

(Victorville)— Usually, if you take two great things and combine them, the result is something amazing. So, take for instance, Scarlett Johansson, known for her action packed role as Black Widow in the Marvel cinematic universe, and Luc Besson, the man behind one of the greatest action/dramas I have ever seen, Taken. Should be an amazing film, right?

Wrong.

With Lucy, the story revolves around the movie’s namesake: an unsuspecting, down on her luck young lady named Lucy (Johansson), who gets caught up in a bad situation and is forced to be a mule for a new drug that unlocks the mind’s capabilities. Well,  of course, something goes wrong and Lucy gets exposed to the drug in a large dose, which begins to unlock her mind and gives her abilities, understanding and knowledge beyond comprehension. Only a certain professor (Morgan Freeman) can help, but can he help in time before her world comes to an end?

I wish the world in this movie came to a quick end, instead of the slow, drawn out film it ended up being. From all those involved, as well as the high octane previews, you would think this would be a blockbuster action flick. Instead, you get all the action seen in the previews being the only action present. What you get the most of in this film is a lot of dialogue between Lucy and Morgan Freeman’s character. I felt bored to tears by the middle of the film, as I constantly checked my phone to see how much time had elapsed.

Looking for an exciting movie to watch at the end of the summer? This isn’t it. If you are looking for a sleep aide in the form of a film, then you have come to the right place. Steer clear of Lucy, you will be glad you did.
