Lower Weight, Fewer Hot Flashes

A small study indicates that overweight women who have hot flashes may have fewer of them if they lower their weight. Researchers found this in 40 women, half of whom took part in a weight loss program – in scientific terms, that’s an intervention – and half of whom did not.

At the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, researcher Rebecca Thurston:

“Women who received the intervention lost a lot more weight than the women who did not – on average, about 20 pounds – and they also tended to show greater reductions in hot flashes.”

Thurston says her study doesn’t prove weight loss helps to control hot flashes, but she says it looks like a benefit that could be added to other reasons to control weight.

The study in the journal Menopause was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
