(Victorville)– On Friday, Dec.12, 2014, students and coaches for the In It To Thin It program created by Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group Medical Group will celebrate Christmas with a special party designed for them. All in attendance will have dinner, play games, and students will receive a gift, courtesy of Heritage and the programs stakeholders.
“Last year was spectacular, but this year will be better.” Those are the words of George Mangum, Director of Fitness for Heritage and Heritage Life Fit-Fitness Dept. “We were amazed at last year’s gift giveaway and watched our students’ stunned faces as they received a new pair of Nike workout shoes. So, being able to experience something even better this year is very exciting.”
The “In It To THIN It” youth personal empowerment, anti-obesity program, which runs from October to May, is now in its third year of providing local area high school students with the skills and support necessary to make better, healthier lifestyle choices.
Eligible High Desert area high school students are invited to participate in the “In It To THIN It” youth personal empowerment program. The program, now in its third year, was started in 2012 by Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group and Victorville Motors to provide local area high school students with the tools necessary to lose weight as well as make better decisions about their nutrition and fitness.
New for this year; participants will receive at $25 stipend. Beginning with the November 2014 IITTI Cross Fit Challenge, students are weighed in at an event each month. If they lose weight, they are credited with the $25 stipend. The stipend will be paid at the end in May if they complete the program.
The community outreach program of Heritage Lifefit is under the medical direction of Pediatrician, Dr. Gunjeet Kala Ahluwalia, MD and fitness direction of HeritageLifefit fitness director George Mangum, M.A. Students work with their school coaches three times a week as well as attend a monthly rally, in-school training, field trips, and other activities. The coaches monitor their progress and help them to obtain their goals. Best of all, many of their parents are starting to get more involved too.
“I know you’re going to say that it’s not easy to do this and it’s hard to get up in the morning but when you reach your goal you’ll see that it’s all worth it!” – Miranda Yates, 2012 Participant
Currently, Silverado High School, Victor Valley High School, Excelsior Education Center, Oak Hills High School, Hesperia High School, Granite Hills High School, Apple Valley High School, and Serrano High School are participating in the program.
“In It To THIN It” runs from October to May. In 2013-14, the students lost more than 2,000 pounds! Winners of this years challenge will be awarded their prizes at an award ceremony hosted by Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group.
The 2014-15 sponsors are Victorville Motors, “It’s a Gas”, SouthWest Gas, Macy’s, PacificHorizon, Assistance League of the Victor Valley, RadNet and RB Enterprises.
