(Victor Valley)– The CSUSB Opera Theatre announces its spring production of the Latin American opera composed by Robert Xavier Rodríguez, La Curandera.”

Rodríguez’s Mexican folklore-themed opera intertwines Mexican culture with opera, delightfully offering audiences traditional folklore music with a Mozart-esque twist in the score.

“La Curandera” is a work with such stage presence and originality, both musically and thematically, that it will appeal to audiences who normally would turn a deaf ear to new music.  The music for this opera is textured, multifaceted and alive with an upbeat orchestration reflecting the Latino culture.

“We are so excited to bring this opera to CSUSB,” said opera director Stacey Fraser.  “It is full of life, color and amazing music, not to mention it is pretty funny! I’m sure audiences of all ages will enjoy this culturally rich opera and we hope to see the support from our CSUSB family and the community.”

This comedic one-act opera is based on the story of young couple, Alberto and Alba, whose love is threatened by distrust and jealousy after a misunderstanding that creates suspicions of infidelity in Alba.

In hopes to save her relationship and rid herself of these feelings of distrust, Alba agrees to visit La Curandera, a mystical witch-like healer who uses her non-existent magical powers to save Alba and Alberto’s relationship. Although La Curandera relies very little on magic, her listening skills, charisma and kind spirit evokes feelings of happiness and trust in Alba and the others.

In the end, the couple finds their happiness together, thanks to La Curandera and her ability to cast a spell with her charm and wittiness.

“La Curandera” opens May 1, with a second performance on May 2. Both performances will be  at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Tickets are on sale now: $10 for students, $13 for staff/faculty and $17 general admission. Visit music.csusb.edu or contact the CSUSB Music box office at (909) 537-7516 to purchase tickets or for more information.
