(Victor Valley) – Students at Victor Valley College often struggle to make ends meet. Many work at least part time, are single parents or come from families of modest means. For these students especially, the cost of college can be a real stumbling block on their way to completion. For almost all students, the expense is a challenge that can distract them from success in the classroom. To address this challenge, the Victor Valley College Foundation, along with some 40 community sponsors and endowment funds, will award approximately $125,000 in scholarships to more than 120 students during its annual Scholarship Recognition Ceremony on June 10th.
“A scholarship makes a real difference in the life of a student. Not only do scholarships relieve very real financial challenges, but they tell recipients that we believe in them. Some of our students don’t hear that enough” said Norm Hurst, the Victor Valley College Foundation Scholarship Chairperson.
This year’s scholarship award total surpassed the amount given last year by nearly 30% as the Foundation sought to expand its effort to help students succeed. The Foundation’s program continues to be the leading clearinghouse of scholarship awards for high desert residents pursing their education at Victor Valley College.
Every year, scholarships help nursing students learn to save lives, fuel education for aviation technicians in training, and pave the way for transfer students to advance. In fact, awards are made to students pursuing just about every major the college offers and are typically given to those who demonstrate financial need, community service, or academic success. Applications are accepted at the beginning of the Victor Valley College’s Spring Semester to prepare for the following academic year.
The Scholarship Recognition Ceremony will bring this year’s recipients together with sponsors who made their awards possible on June 10th at 4pm in the Performing Arts Center at Victor Valley College. Anyone thinking about awarding scholarships should consider attending to learn firsthand about the impact they could have on students. The event is regularly hailed as one of the Foundation’s most meaningful experiences of the year.
