(Adelanto) —With 62% of the city’s 32,000 residents receiving welfare, Adelanto Mayor Rich Kerr and his wife Mistey decided something more needed to be done to help residents struggling in this tough economy. So in February they decided to arrange sharing of food and clothing for Adelanto residents.

“With Easter and Spring Break happening soon, we wanted to make sure that our residents in need had another option to take care of their families,” said Mayor Kerr. So Mayor Kerr and Mistey began to solicit support from others who shared their desire to extend a helping hand.

The response has been so overwhelming that on Saturday, March 19, 2016 the doors will open to serve families from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the newly christened Glasper Center located at 17537 Montezuma Street in Adelanto.

Using cash donations from three sources—including the Kerr’s—representatives from four non-profits located in Adelanto have used their contacts in San Bernardino County making numerous trips to a food bank to purchase name brand food “dirt cheap” in preparation for the March 19 event.

“We have been receiving so many food items that 10 dedicated volunteers have been stocking four, 12 foot by 12 foot rooms that are almost completely full with food,” said Mayor Kerr. “We’re expecting that we’ll have enough food to give each family at least 2-3 bags to help them through the Easter holiday.”

Mayor Kerr announced the event as the first annual, hoping that future Mayors will carry on the tradition. The Mayor believes that many of us are doing well financially in this economy, and events like food share allow us to reach out to those who want help. “We’re not concerned about a person’s income level for them to participate, the only requirement to share in the food and clothing giveaway is proof that they live in Adelanto.”

In addition to sharing food at the Glasper Center, the nonprofit group Swapping Mamas will be on sight for clothing giveaways as well. The event will take place rain or shine. In anticipation of a large turnout additional parking will be available at City Hall at 11600 Air Expressway.
