(Apple Valley)– With more than 43 years of experience in the veterinary field, Dr. Jaime Velasco plays a vital role in the health and well-being of the animals at the Apple Valley Animal Shelter as the facility’s supervising veterinarian. His time and dedication to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents is just one of the many reasons he recently received the Top Award for Outstanding Achievement in Leadership Excellence in the Field of Veterinary Medicine and Community Leadership.
Acting in a supervisory role for the Apple Valley Animal Shelter, Dr. Velasco provides medical services for the animals including spaying or neutering of adopted pets, further instruction for the shelter’s registered veterinary technicians and conducts monthly inspections of the facility. In addition to the services provided to Apple Valley’s Animal Shelter, Dr. Velasco is the primary veterinarian and owner of the Bear Valley Animal Hospital.
“I am very proud of my dad’s accomplishments and it has been a pleasure to work alongside him for the past 16 years,” said Bear Valley Animal Hospital Office Manager Mayra Galvan. “He has always believed in helping his community and giving back.”
Dr. Velasco moved the high desert in 2004 from Los Angeles where he worked as a commissioner for the Department of Animal Regulations. Velasco regularly conducted business with local organizations for low-income adopters and was instrumental in obtaining the first sponsored spay and neuter program for the city. Dr. Velasco began his contract work for extended services offered to the Apple Valley Animal Shelter in 2008.
“Apple Valley Animal Services is fortunate to have Dr. Velasco as our supervising veterinarian,” Said Animal Services Director Gina Whiteside. “His high level of professionalism is a benefit not only to our staff, but also to the many animals in our care. He deserves this recognition and we are proud to continue our working relationship with him.”
Dr. Velasco was selected for his achievements by the City of Los Angeles’ Public Works Department among other candidates throughout the state of California, and was honored at a ceremony hosted by the Top Outstanding Filipino Awards and the City of Los Angeles. Dr. Velasco is a member of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA), the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
