(Apple Valley)– Reaching 13 years of employment with the town, Andy Shoup has filled nearly every recreation position during his tenure. Today, as Recreation Supervisor, Shoup is responsible for overseeing both youth and adult sports as well as the aquatic and afterschool programs. Additionally, in 2018, Andy was tasked to be the hands-on lead for some of Apple Valley’s large scale special events such as the Freedom Festival and award-winning Sunset Concert Series. Having accepted these new responsibilities, Andy and the recreation team have continued to provide exceptional events and service to Apple Valley’s most devoted fans.
“Working incredibly long hours, often seven days a week, Andy represents the best of what is recreation and the staff of the Town of Apple Valley,” said Parks and Recreation Manager Ralph Wright. “I am proud to have Andy as part of the Recreation Department and wholeheartedly congratulate him on his selection as the employee of the quarter and the outstanding job and service he provides to the community.”
Shoup began his diverse career in 2006 as a part-time Recreation Leader, lifeguard and office assistant. These positions would provide Andy the knowledge and experience to become a full-time Recreation Coordinator. In 2016, Shoup was promoted to his current supervisory role, which would land him the employee of the quarter award at the August 14 Town Council meeting.
“Despite the long hours, I always try and find a space and time to be in the moment and watch it all while I’m there,” said Shoup. “Watching our staff interact with the citizens and seeing everyone enjoy themselves is what makes me the most proud. That’s what we’re here to do.”
Nominations for Employee of the Quarter are submitted by peers or management and honorees are selected by a committee.
