(Victor Valley)– Congratulations to the team at CEMEX on the purchase of a brand-new, low-emission locomotive.
The locomotive uses clean technologies and consumes 25 percent less fuel than the previous engine. The locomotive will make about six trips a day between CEMEX’s Victorville plant and its Apple Valley quarry. The Victorville plant has been in operation since 1916 and employs about 220 people. Using traditional economic multiplier, those core manufacturing jobs make possible an additional 2,000 local jobs. The Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District played an important role in obtaining grant funds in support of the locomotive.
The new engine will cut emissions by 34 tons a year and greatly reduce the number of haul trucks on the road.
