(Apple Valley)– Fresh out of high school and looking for a career path, Gene Whiteside volunteered with the Town’s Information Technology department in the Fall of 2017. Gene assisted in supporting the Town’s technology infrastructure and was instrumental in setting up a town-wide anti-virus program that now serves as the first line of defense against cyber-security threats.
Today, as a full-time Information Systems Technician, Gene’s focus is on supporting the build-out and maintenance of IT solutions for the Town’s operating systems, networks and digital assets. In his spare time, Gene enjoys fitness activities, mixed martial arts and is currently studying to receive his Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification.
“A lot of our job is really a team effort,” said Gene. “It’s great being recognized as an individual, however, most of our work is done as a team. I am looking forward to the next few months as we continue to harden our systems and streamline our disaster recovery program. It is our job to make the Town more presentable and safer.”
“Gene is a great asset to our organization and has been instrumental in ensuring the Town’s IT systems are continuously operating for our staff as they serve our community,” said Assistant Director Orlando Acevedo. “Gene is to be commended for the hard work he does to help the Town safeguard against future technology disruptions and continuously improve our IT environment.”
Gene was recognized as the Employee of the Quarter at the March 12th Town Council Meeting.
Nominations for Employee of the Quarter are submitted by peers or management and honorees are selected by a committee.
